In his first season as the head coach last year, the Cobra golf team was the most improved team in the AAC conference tournament moving up three spots in the season's standings. In addition, one of the players, Greyson Rossi tied for medalist honors in the spring AAC tournament and another player, Shane Pearson led the National Qualifying tournament for 52 holes before losing on the final two holes.
With the success enjoyed at the end of last season and with an outstanding recruiting class joining the program, a solid foundation including both academics and athletic ability has been established and the golf program should achieve new goals and standards.
"Increasing the roster size and moving the program forward takes a lot of support. Our Athletic Director, Chris Holt and our Dean of Students, Greg Nayor both have recognized where our golf program can be taken and have fully supported the academic and athletic goals we have set for this year. With their support and the support of the school, we will continue to see the golf program grow and become a premier small college program that will continue to promote academics and athletic ability," stated Coach Collier.
Coach Collier has played, coached and taught golf for more than 30 years. His high school team won four district titles, four regional titles and one state tournament under Coach Cecil Maddux, who was one of the most successful coaches in Virginia and was recently inducted into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame.
"Coach Maddux was a tremendous amateur golfer and truly taught the game of golf to all of his players. His passion for the game and his dedication to structured practices and skills allowed anyone that participated in his program to become a good golfer. I have tried to carry the same principles and philosophy into our program," stated Coach Collier.
Coach Collier is married to the former Sandy Ward of Cowen, WV and they have four children, Nathan, Chase, Logan and Mekenzie. The Colliers reside in Blountville, TN.
