Scott Hoagland - Head Coach - 5th Season

Scott Hoagland, who serves as the head coach of the Virginia Intermont College men's basketball program, is entering his fifth season at the helm for the Cobras.  Hoagland, 33, took over for Thad Johnson, who resigned following the 2006-2007 season.

Hoagland is currently in his first intercollegiate coaching stint, but is no novice to basketball played at the next level.  He came to Virginia Intermont in 2007 after spending seven years on staff with future Naismith Hall of Fame Coach Steve Smith at perennial high school powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, VA.  While at Oak Hill, Hoagland had the opportunity to coach, teach, and mentor some of basketball's brightest stars including:  Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Rajon Rondo (Boston Celtics), Josh Smith (Atlanta Hawks), Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee Bucks), Mike Beasley (Minnesota Timberwolves), and Tywon Lawson (Denver Nuggets).

Hoagland has demonstrated the ability to develop player talent.  Marquette Knight has developed in to one of the Appalachian Athletic Conference's most versatile players demonstrating the ability to score from anywhere on the floor.  Jimme Ross has become the most dynamic defensive player in the AAC.  The young nucleus of Daniel Ross, Tihlee Anderson, and Josh Hart has flourished under Coach Hoagland's tutelage.  In addition to his development of players, Coach Hoagland has assembled back to back stout recruiting classes and all four of this year's seniors are on pace to earn their Bachelor's Degrees in their specific curriculum on time.

Known to be a tenacious competitor, Hoagland  is driven to build Virginia Intermont into one of the elite programs in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.  During his tenure at Virginia Intermont, Hoagland and the Cobras have taken great strides in reaching this goal.  According to Coach Hoagland, "The future is now!  We are athletic, long, and very talented.  We must continue to outwork our competition and we must come together and mature as a team.  If we do that, this has the potential to be a very special season in Bristol!"

Coach Hoagland is a native of Lynchburg, VA.  He is a 1996, graduate of Brookville High School.  He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in English and his Collegiate Professional Teaching License from Radford University in 2001.  Currently Coach Hoagland is working on his Master's of Education Degree at Old Dominion University.

Hoagland and his wife, Susan, have two children - son Aiden (6) and daughter Anna (2).

Chris Tolliver - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Chris Tolliver enters his first year as an assistant coach for the Virginia Intermont College Cobras.  Coach Tolliver comes to VIC after spending several successful years coaching high school basketball in the state of Kentucky and working the national camp circuit.

Tolliver, 27, will be involved in all facets of the program's day-to-day operations including on-floor coaching and off-campus recruiting.  He will also be heavily involved in the academic progress of the Cobras student-athletes as he will be administrating team study-tables and team academic progress reports.

Coach Hoagland provided the following insight on Coach Tolliver.  "Chris is a basketball junkie.  He eats, sleeps, and breathes the game of basketball.  He possesses a very keen knowledge of the X's and O's of the game.  He is a defensive tactician.  Most importantly he is a good person.  He is at VIC for all of the right reasons.  Chris will be a tremendous asset for our program."

A native of Whitesburg, KY, Tolliver played at Whitesburg High School before enrolling at Morehead State University in 2002.  While at Whitesburg, Tolliver amassed quite a resume'.  He was named to All District and All Region Teams (2001 and 2002) while playing on a team that led the state of Kentucky in scoring and made it to the state quarterfinals.  While in the state tournament, Tolliver set a unique individual record when he became the only player in the history of Kentucky's State High School Tournament to post a triple-double in a game without scoring a single point.

Coach Tolliver graduated from Morehead State University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.  He also possesses his Teaching Licensure from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and is pursuing his Master of Arts Degree from Morehead State Univeristy.
