Joseph attended Yuma Catholic High School where he was a four year letterman and starter. In 2006-07 his team won the state championship, in 2008-09 Gandara was awarded the "Team Best Forward" award, in 2008-09 he earned the "Most Goals" award and in 2009-10 he was named a team captain and to the All-Region team.

"Joseph's humility and leadership wil be greatly used on our team. He is a state champion and has been the recipient of many awards. He will help us in midfield and forward positions," stated Coach Robert Ssejjemba.
