The Cobras conquered the wind and a lengthy golf course to move up from sixth to fourth Tuesday on the concluding day of the eight-team men's Appalachian Athletic Conference Spring Invitational.

VI shot 315 each round on "The General" course at Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville, Ga., a 7,300-yard monster that Cobras coach Louis Collier said played even a few hundred yards longer on Tuesday as conditions got gusty.

"It's pretty tough," he said.

The weather didn't phase VI, though, as the Cobras moved up the field by matching their Monday performance as the teams in front of them fell back.

"I'd say somewhat pleased - very pleased with the second round," Collier said when asked for his reaction to VI's fourth-place finish.

VI had the third-best second round score, behind tournament winner Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan.

Although Collier said there is still plenty of room for improvement, the Cobras had their best showing at the event in years, improving from seventh place last spring and sixth place in the fall.

Two VI golfers, Justin Brown and Greyson Rossi, were named to the 10-member All-AAC team based on their combined performances in the fall and spring tournaments. Brown, a sophomore ranked near the top 10 percent of 1,800 NAIA golfers around the nation, finished in fifth place in this week's spring event with rounds of 77 and 75.

"Justin is Mr. Consistent," Collier said. "He's always going to shoot in the mid-70s."

Rossi recovered from a rough front nine Monday to finish 11th among individuals in Georgia and Collier said the senior's overall stats should get him an NAIA All-American nomination next month.

The same eight AAC teams that took part in the Spring Invitational will compete again on April 19 and 20 in a three-round tournament in Winchester, Tenn., for a NAIA nationals berth.

Collier said his team still needs to work on isolating errors to avoid turning a bogey hole into a double or triple, but he said he continues to be encouraged by the program's progress.

"I think we've got an outside shot," he said about making a trip to nationals.
