
BRISTOL, Virginia - The Virginia Intermont Cobras fell short in their 2011 opener against the Southern Virginia Knights, 2-1 in overtime. Virginia Intermont was without 6 players including Austin Dunleavy, their leading scorer from 2010 who was out sick.
SVU's Chris Teerlink scored in the 33rd minute on a free kick after a Thiago Lopes foul just outside VI's box. Adam Freeman for SVU set up the free kick in place for Teerlink. He scored missing Intermont's wall and going off the fingertips of goalkeeper Adam O'Dell as he dove to his left side.
In the 31st minute, Southern Virginia's Branden Seeberger went down with a back spasm injury but would return in the second half.
Intermont came close to scoring during the first half hitting the post twice and also getting 6 shots on goal while holding Southern Virginia to just 3 shots on goal.
Early on in the second half, Virginia Intermont's Thiago Lopes scored the equalizing goal in the 51st minute. Intermont nearly took the lead in the 67th minute when Lopes crossed the ball in a chase down to the goal line. The ball missed the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Robbie Key for Southern Virginia and came right to the feet of Christopher Bennett, but the ball went just wide to the right.
Southern Virginia's Josh Smith scored the game winning goal in the 99th minute off a free kick after a foul on Virginia Intermont.
Yannick Chiepodeu led the Cobras in shots and shots on goal with 6 and 2 respectively while Branden Seeberger led the Knights with 5 shots. The Knights totaled 28 shots and 9 shots on goal with the Cobras having 21 shots and 8 shots on goal.
