Virginia Intermont College has named Katy Morrow Stigers as the new head coach for the women's soccer program.

Since 1999, Stigers has coached for several club teams throughout the south. She served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama in 2002.

Stigers knows what it takes to win. Since her youth she has been a part of several winning traditions. She was a four-year starter in her high school career at "powerhouse" Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia. During that time Stigers captained her team to a state championship in 1997, and also was part of a Georgia Open Cup club state champion team in 1996. In 1997 she was Gwinnett County Player of the Year. The following year, she was again a state finalist and named to the Georgia senior all-star game.

"We are thrilled to have Coach Stigers join our staff," said Athletic Director Chris Holt.  "She brings a consistent history of academic and athletic excellence to our department and a unique familiarity with the Tri-Cities community."

Stigers, a 2002 graduate of King College in Bristol, TN, was a standout athlete for their soccer program. She was the only NAIA women's soccer All-American and All-Academic American in 2001 in the nation. As a captain, she led her team to the Region XII Tournament appearance finals in the program's fifth year of existence. She continued her soccer career as a player on the U.S. Amateur Soccer Association Region III team in 2002, and won a Silver Medal at the U.S. Soccer Festival in Houston, TX.

Stigers earned an M.A. in Urban Affairs from Saint Louis University in 2007. Since that time, she has been a graduate student in the Ph.D. program in political science at Emory University.

In accepting the position, Stigers commented, "I am delighted to join the Virginia Intermont family during an exciting time for the college. I want to thank President Phillips and Athletic Director Holt for their confidence and for giving me the opportunity to re-establish women's soccer. I know that VI has had strong teams in the past, and I look forward to continuing in that tradition."

Stigers is a current member of the United States Soccer Federation Coaches Organization and National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and she completed her USSF national "C" License in April of this year.
