Cobras' Zane Rollins and Tyson Lynn named All-tournament
October 27, 2010 - Big Stone Gap, VA - The Virginia Intermont Men's Golf Team completed their 2010 Fall Season with a second place finish in the UVA-Wise Collegiate Invitational held at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap, Viriginia.
The course is the shortest course that the Cobras will play all year but provides extreme challenges on the small greens and potential trouble on every shot. "LPCC is the type of course that when you see the scorecard for the first time, you think that it will be easy and after you play it one time, you will be humbled," Coach Collier stated.
For the second consecutive tournament, the Cobras led going into the final round but could not hold that ranking. The Cobras shot a 311 in the first round as they faced 45 mph winds all day and they posted a 308 in the second round and lost by one stroke to the host school, UVA-Wise. The Cobras finished with a tournamnet score of 619 and UVA-Wise finished at 618. Coach Collier, "I was very pleased with the first round score of 311. Even though, it was our highest score this fall, the conditions could not have been worse as we faced 45 mph wind throughout the entire round. It would literally push the ball up to 75 yards in any direction. It was brutal conditions and our young men kept their composure."
Individually, Clint Lowe of UVA-Wise won the individual medalist honors with VI's Zane Rollins finishing second and VI's Tyson Lynn finishing third, both being named to the All-Tournament Team.
"I am pleased with both, Zane and Tyson and their performance in the wind on Tuesday and the rain on Wednesday. I was very proud of Zane and his ability to play within himself. Most long hitters do not fair well at LPCC and Zane is definitely a long-hitter, but he played to his length on the holes that he could take advantage of and he did not take unnecessary risks on the holes in which he had to take away his length. He showed a lot of maturity as a golfer this week," - Coach Collier added.
Coach Collier continued, "Reflecting on the fall season, we played well at times and could have played better at times. We had some very good experiences in terms of playing in tournaments with extremely competitive fields and we played a vast array of golf courses. There is no doubt that we are continuing to move forward with this program. I am expecting the spring season to be successful and I am expecting to have more players contend for the tournament spots in the spring. The competition will be beneficial for our team."
