Justin Brown and Tyson Lynn post excellent rounds
Kiahwah Island, South Carolina - The Virginia Intermont College Men's Golf Team traveled to Kiawah Island, South Carolina over the weekend to compete in the Kiawah Island Collegiate Invitational. The event was hosted by USC-Aiken and featured a field of 20 NCAA II teams and the Cobras, which was the only NAIA team in the field. The field featured many of the top NCAA II teams in the country including Barton College, that won the tournament, Flagler College, Georgia College, USC-Aiken, University of Indianapolis among others. The tournament was held at the Cougar Pointe Golf Course, which is a Gary Player design.
"What a tremendous experience for our young men. We will probably not see another tournament this year that has 21 quality teams combined with a golf course of this magnitude. The course, while not long, required precision tee shots on most of the holes and included a tremendous number of sand bunkers and small ponds. It is without doubt, one of the best designed courses you will find." - Coach Collier stated.
The Cobras finished 16th out of 21 teams with scores of 313 and 304. Individually Justin Brown finished 26th with scores of 74 - 75 for a total of 149 and Tyson Lynn finished 34th with scores of 78 - 72 for a total of 150. These players finished 8 and 9 strokes behind the individual winner.
"All of our players have some very good moments. I saw an improvement in regards to course management decisions over the three days, which was part of the experience that I wanted them to gain. Justin played well with two very different rounds. In round one, he had 6 birdies and shot two over par and in the second round he was three over after three holes and finished that way over the next 15 holes. Tyson hit the ball extremely well in the first round but struggled with putting and shot a 6 over 78; but in the second round he finished with an even par 72 and was two under most of the round. These two guys adjusted well and competed with in the very tough field. While disappointed with 16th, we had talked before the tournament that finishing in the top 10 with all NCAA II schools would be a huge accomplishment. After this tournament, we now know that a top 10 finish was very realistic. We gained a lot of confidence this week. " Coach Collier.
Coach Collier closed, "This was a first class tournament that USC-Aiken hosted and it will benefit us as we move forward. I am very pleased that many spectators commented on how well our young men handled themselves on the course and how competitively we played. I am very proud of our team."
